Definition:
Realization of the soteriological objective to become a Buddha.

Bodhicitta – the "thought (citta) of enlightenment (bodhi)" – is the realization of the soteriological objective to become a Buddha as a fully liberated being [1, 2]. Although the theoretical conditions for its development could be traced already in earlier Buddhist texts, the concept is not prevalent here, like in later Tantric as well as non-Tantric Mahāyāna, where the Bodhicitta became a core concept being essential for the ideal of the Bodhisattva [3]. The term cannot be found in Pāli sources, but the expression bodhaye cittam as a forerunner appears in the Mahāvastu-Avadāna (Tale of the Great Events).
