| English | On the other hand, even if one knows that the object is empty, clinging to it is not reversed because the mere basis of imputation is not dissipated. This being so, one may well understand that all phenomena are without true existence, but the fact is that as long as all their appearances are not dissipated, it is difficult to reverse one’s clinging to them as truly existent, as well as the feelings of desire and so forth that one may have in their regard.121Mipham’s point here seems to be that the Gelugpas say that, as long as beings do not realize fully the emptiness of the basis of imputation (the partless particles), clinging to the aggregates is not overcome. But if this is so, the converse ought also to be true: when one has realized fully the emptiness of phenomena, up to and including the partless particles—as the Arhats are said to do—all clinging to the aggregates should be dissipated. But in that case, what are we to make of the Arhats with remainder, like Shariputra, Kubja, and so on? According to the Gelugpa theory, these Arhats fully realized the emptiness of the partless particles, and yet the appearances of the aggregates appeared to them as vividly as ever. And it was on the basis of that appearance that they would, for instance, seek food when they were hungry. |
