Description

In the 1970s, with the goal of preserving the oral tradition, Matthieu Ricard began collecting stories of Patrul Rinpoche (dpal sprul rin po che) (1808-1887). Many of the sources for these accounts were personally acquainted with direct students of Patrul Rinpoche. This book is a collection of many of these brief anecdotes, translated into English, supplemented by excepts from two written biographies (namthar), which have been arranged roughly in chronological order to read as a larger biographical account.

These are stories of a humorous and inspirational nature, a record of oral tradition rather than scholarly history. Perhaps few but Matthieu Ricard, with decades of intimacy with such a number of Tibetan masters, could have collected so many stories and recounted them in such moving English.

This book also contains short biographies of a number of Patrul Rinpoche's masters, disciples, and influences, illustrations, glossary, and finely detail source information. (Source: Shambhala Publications)
