===Analysis of D3878 and D3879===
This page presents a simple analysis of two texts appearing next to each other in volume 106 of the Dege Tengyur, D3878 and D3879, purporting to be a "synopsis" or "summary" ("བསྡུས་པ") of ''The Bodhicaryāvatāra'' (BCA), but which are in fact mere extractions of 80 and 29 verses from the BCA, respectively, although some of the verses appear to come from a different version of the text than D3871. Here we will present all the verses in each text and identify which verses are copies of BCA verses and which are modified or different from the root text. 

The texts are the '''Bodhisattvacaryāvatāraṣaṭtriṃśatpiṇḍārtha''' (D3878) and '''Bodhisattvacaryāvatārapiṇḍārtha''' (D3879). Both of these texts are attributed to someone named either Dharmapāla or Dharmakīrti (gser gling pa) from Suvarṇadvīpa, a teacher of Ātīśa Dīpaṃkaraśrījñāna, who is the translator of both texts as well, with the Tibetan Nak Tso Tsultrim Gyalwa (Nag mtsho tshul khrims rgyal ba). These texts were known by Louis de la Vallée Poussin and their character was mentioned by Ejima as early as 1966.  Helmut Eimer (1981) has already treated these texts to some review and compares the verses with the Sanskrit original, and they are mentioned by Saito (1999) and others, more recently by Fredrik Liland (2009). However, these previous articles do not list the text in its entirety and compare them line by line to other versions, as we do here. 

Apparently, Tsongkhapa mentions these texts in his ''byang chub sems dpa'i tshul khrims kyi rnam bshad byang chub gzhung lam zhes bya ba'' (Columbia AIBS database, Paul Hackett), but I have not reviewed that to see if there is any direct comment on these short texts. However, it would be interesting to review this because, as you will see below, the "delicate" content of the verses of the 9th chapter contain some of the most changes or differences from the root verses attributed to Śāntideva. For example, if we look at verses 9.2 and 9.3 below, we see that these versions more closely match the Dunhuang Edition ([http://idp.bl.uk/database/oo_scroll_h.a4d?uid=9805406929;recnum=5480;index=1 IOL Tib J 628]) of the Bodhicaryāvatāra.

====D3878: Bodhisattvacaryāvatāraṣaṭtriṃśatpiṇḍārtha====
The title of this text might lead one to believe that there will be a summary or condensed version of the ''Bodhicaryāvatāra'' (BCA) given according to 36 topics (don) or at least in 36 sections or verses. However, upon analysis of the text, it is merely a selection of 80 verses of the root text copied and presented without any preamble or commentary whatsoever. Perhaps it was used as a pedagogical tool by Atisha when he brought it to Tibet or perhaps there were other explanations to go with it that existed and are not preserved in the canon? In order to learn more about this text and clearly identify which verses of this text (Dege 3878) come directly from the BCA (Dege 3871) and thus identify if this text is an original composition, or contains any additional information or commentary, I arranged the Dege input of this text to clearly identify lines and verses and made notes of differences as compared with the Dege edition of the BCA and the BCA text we have associated with Padmakara's translation: [[Byang chub sems dpa'i spyod pa la 'jug pa rtsa ba dang 'grel pa (1990)]], si khron mi rigs dpe skrun khang. Once I reviewed the text in its entirety by hand, I used the BuddhaNexus website, which shows lines that appear in other texts throughout the canon and their relationship, to see if any further identifications can be made.
 
From this arrangement and comparison we can see that this Dege text (D3878) has no commentary or unique additions, no chapter headings or organizing principles, and is merely made of often exact copies of verses from the following chapters of the Dege edition of the BCA:

:18 verses from Chapter 1: Benefit of bodhicitta (bodhicittānuśaṃsa).
:6 verses from Chapter 2: Confession of faults (pāpadeśanā).
:8 verses from Chapter 3: Embracing bodhicitta (bodhicittaparigraha).
:6 verses from Chapter 4: Carefulness (bodhicittāpramāda).
:6 verses from Chapter 5:  Vigilant Introspection (saṃprajanyarakṣaṇa).
:10 verses from Chapter 6: Perfection of patience (kṣāntipāramitā).
:12 verses from Chapter 7: Perfection of diligence (vīryapāramitā).
:7 verses from Chapter 8: Perfection of concentration (dhyānapāramitā).
:3.5 verses from Chapter 9: Perfection of wisdom (prajñāpāramitā).
:4 verses from Chapter 10: Dedication (pariṇāmanā).

The text is composed of 80 verses, making 320 lines of text (not counting the title and homage and final short colophon). These lines are almost all 7 syllables, with the exception of the first seven verses of the text, which have lines of 9 syllables each, and another three verses (BCA 1.34, 1.35, and 2.1, and one verse that has an ending line in 8 syllables, BCA 1.30), all verses from chapter 1 of the BCA. Out of all the lines in this text, only 15 seem to have been rearranged significantly or come from an alternate source. 

According to BuddhaNexus (their version is also ACIP input), there are 13 lines and two half-lines that do not match anywhere else in the canon, let alone the BCA root text. However, the search is limited to 14 syllables as the smallest string, so looking at each line as I have done allows us to be more precise and identify some of the matching lines in the BCA. There is only one complete four line verse (appearing between BCA 7.63 and 7.68 below) that I could not find a match to anywhere, including fuzzy matches with BuddhaNexus, so that single verse is the only real oddity, or perhaps it is the only uniquely composed verse in the whole text. There are only three other unidentified individual lines throughout the text. As for the three and a half verses from the ninth chapter, every single line is modified in some way or are not matched in the BCA text, but in a different small text D3879, the Bodhisattvacaryāvatārapiṇḍārtha, analyzed below. 

A few other lines have minor spelling changes, but generally the spelling of whole verses is identical to BCA root verses (Dege 3871). I have made notes of the few differences with the root verses of the BCA and rearrangements of lines where they occur in parentheses ().

Perhaps these texts used a different Sanskrit original and or were created by the same hand?
