| English | If you now long to meet an authentic teacher, it is because of your inclination toward the Dharma from the past. Jetsun Milarepa, having heard no more than Marpa's name, could not rest until he actually met him.52Marpa Lotsawa Chökyi Lodrö (mar pa lo tsa ba chos kyi blo gros, 1012–97): father of the Kagyu lineage, born in Lhodrak, in southern Tibet. He first studied with Drogmi Lotsawa, then traveled to India three times to meet his root teacher, the mahasiddha pandit Naropa, as well as his other gurus, Maitripa, Kukuripa, and Jñanagarbha. Jetsun Milarepa, Shepai Dorje (rje btsun mi la ras pa bzhad pa’i rdo rje, 1040–1123), his foremost disciple, is perhaps the most famous example of a perfect spiritual disciple, practitioner, and teacher. The teacher stands at the juncture of the path, rhe point where you could either go up or down. You should receive teachings from him, and allow his instructions to mature through direct experience. |
