Once a Khampa came to see Drubthop Choyung, one of Lord Gampopa's48Gampopa, Sönam Rinchen (sgam po pa bsod nams rin chen, 1079–1153): born in Nyal, eastern Tibet, he first trained as a physician, hence his name Dagpo Lharje (dwags po lha rje), the Physician of Dagpo “(the name of the province in which he was to spend many years). He was ordained at the age of twenty-six after his two children and wife died in an epidemic. After studying and practicing the Kadampa teachings, at the age of thirty-two he met Jetsun Milarepa, whose foremost disciple he was to become. His main disciples were the first Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa (dus gsum mkhyen pa, 1110–70), Phagmo Drupa (phag mo gru pa rdo rje rgyal po, 1110–70), and Dharma Wangchuk (dhar ma dbang phyug). foremost disciples, and, offering him a length of cloth, requested teachings. Several times, despite his insistent pleas, Drupthop Choyung put him off. But again the Khampa insisted, and finally the master took the man's hands in his, and said, three times, "I will die, you will die." And then he added, "That's all my guru taught me; that's all I practice. Just meditate on that. I promise there is nothing greater."
