The meanings of these are progressively established as follows: A chariot is not intrinsically the same as its parts—the axle, wheels, and so forth. This is because, if it were the same, there would be the problem that as the chariot is one, the parts would also be one; and alternatively, that as the parts are many, the chariot would also be many. A chariot is not intrinsically different from its parts because, if it were, then it would be essentially different. If things that are essentially different occur at the same time, then they are other, unrelated objects—like a horse and an ox.
