The Sāṃkhyas and others say, “We assert the person as the support of karmic causality, a person that is singular, permanent, and independent. Thereby, the causal relation makes sense from one person coming here from a previous life and moving on to another life in the future. For you, this is not reasonable. If the person who acts is impermanent, then it would follow that the person would not be the one experiencing the effect, for the self had been annihilated at that time. [762] There would be other problems as well, such that it would follow that the results of actions would perish, and that one would meet with the results of what one did not do. Likewise, as it is expressed by an opponent in the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way:
