[761] Thus, there are two aspects within the qualities of the six categories, what is permanent and what is impermanent. Action is exclusively impermanent; the others are permanent. This system’s path of liberation is through bathing, initiations, fasting, celibacy, sacrifices, and so on. These virtues are held to bring about liberation from existence; the opposite of these are vices, the causes of existence. At some point, through meditating on yoga in accord with a teacher’s essential instructions, one comes to know things like the faculties and self differently. Then one comes to see reality and understand the nature of the six categories. At that point, one does not accumulate virtue or vice; one does not accumulate new karma, and old karma becomes exhausted. Thereby, one becomes free from the former qualities of the self, such as the body, faculties, and cognition, and does not take on a new body of faculties and so on. Like a fire that has consumed its kindling, the entirety of birth is severed and only the self remains; this is held to be liberation. It is said that there is no beginning to cyclic existence, but that there is an end. There are some slight differences within the philosophical systems of the Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika as subschools, but I have explained them in common because their general structure is similar.[p.176]The Profound Reality of Interdependence
