English

They are called “Sāṃkhyas” (“Enumerators”) because they accept the determined number of twenty-five objects of knowledge, or because they accept liberation through knowing the characteristics of the twenty-five principles. Also, they are called “Kāpilas” because they regard Kapila as their teacher, or are called “proponents of material causality” because they hold materiality to be the cause. They are also called “manifestors” (gsal byed pa) because they believe that the effect exists at the time of the cause and is made manifest by conditions. There are also ways of explaining the Kāpilas and the Sāṃkhyas as distinct.
