English

The person in the former and latter expressions of “person” and “phenomena” is a person who is designated in dependence upon its basis of designation, the aggregates, like Upagupta. “Phenomena,” as phenomena bifurcated into persons and phenomena, should be understood as the basis of designation for the person, like the phenomena of Upagupta’s aggregates such as his eyes and ears. The two selves that are the conceived objects (zhen yul) of the twofold apprehension of self are, like the horns of a rabbit, not even conventionally existent. The observed objects (dmigs yul) of the twofold apprehensions of self are both persons and phenomena; so those two, along with the twofold apprehension of self and the twofold selflessness, are conventionally existent.
