The way that the things removed on the path of meditation are eliminated is explained as follows: There are two systems, in terms of whether or not what is to be removed on the path of meditation is present on the first ground. For the first in which they are present, the greater of the great of what is to be removed on the path of meditation is divided into the coarse and the subtle. The direct antidote for the coarse ones is the uninterrupted path of meditation on the first ground, and the direct antidote for the subtle greater ones to be removed is the uninterrupted path on the second ground. What is removed from the middling of the great to the lesser of the middling is progressively eliminated by the appropriate stage, from the uninterrupted path on the third ground to the uninterrupted path on the seventh ground. The three lesser ones to be removed are held to be eliminated simultaneously. There are many accounts of how they are eliminated, but mainly these three are eliminated by the uninterrupted path at the end of the seventh ground. The attainment of the path of liberation that eliminates them occurs at the same time as the attainment of the eighth ground. The eighth-ground gnosis is permeated by gnosis that is pure of afflictive obscurations. This is the intent of the words of the Introduction to the Middle Way:
