| English | The way that afflictive obscurations are eliminated is as follows: For the Hīnayāna, the removal of the afflictive obscurations begins from the forbearance of the phenomena of suffering (sdug bsngal chos bzod) on the Hīnayāna path of seeing. The attainment of Hīnayāna Arhatship occurs at the same time as the elimination of the afflictive obscurations. Furthermore, the imputed aspects of the afflictive obscurations are removed by the uninterrupted path of seeing. The innate apprehension of true existence that is to be removed on the path of meditation is divided into nine types, and each of the nine types removed are progressively eliminated by the appropriate stage of the uninterrupted path of meditation. As for the Mahāyāna, the removal of the afflictive obscurations begins from the forbearance of the phenomena of suffering on the Mahāyāna path of seeing. The attainment of the eighth ground, or the attainment of the first path of liberation on the eighth ground, occurs at the same time as the complete elimination of the afflictive obscurations. |
