How afflictive ignorance is identified in general is like this: Asaṅga and his brother Vasubandhu asserted it to be the ignorance that is the mental state of confusion regarding causality and reality. This is held to be different from the view of the transitory collective. Dharmakīrti and some of the masters of Mind-Only and Madhyamaka accepted that afflictive ignorance is the view of the transitory collective that apprehends the person to exist as a self-subsisting substance. Here in Prāsaṅgika, afflictive ignorance is held to be the discordant factor of the gnosis-awareness that realizes the lack of true existence. Also, afflictive ignorance is not merely the absence of this antidotal awareness, or something other than it. Rather, afflictive ignorance is understood to be the apprehension of true existence of persons and phenomena in direct contradiction to this awareness; it is also understood to be delusion (gti mug) within the three poisons. For this reason, to apprehend a self of phenomena is also established as afflictive ignorance.
