| English | Here is what this means: Given that ignorance, craving, and karma are all three causes of a future existence, one might then wonder, “Why is only craving said to be the cause here?” The lack of knowledge, or ignorance, that is first among the twelve links of dependent origination is a cause that perpetuates existence in general. Nevertheless, since it is not an immediate producer, it is not mentioned here. Since craving alone is both the immediate producer and the perpetuator of the continuum for its subsequent effect, just craving is explicitly mentioned here as the cause of a future existence. Karma is also not the primary cause of a future existence because karma will naturally accumulate if craving is present, but if craving is absent, it is not certain that there will be birth in a future existence even with karma. Therefore, for the complete production of existence, between karma and afflictions, afflictions are primary; and among the afflictions, craving is primary. |
