Furthermore, it is known that early Disciple schools did not accept Mahāyāna Sūtras (such as those in the middle wheel) as the Buddha’s Word. After others came, like Nāgārjuna, father and son Āryadeva, there were said to be two factions within the eighteen schools: those that accepted the Mahāyāna as the Buddha’s Word and those that did not. The detractors who said that the Mahāyāna [736] was not the Buddha’s Word were some of the proponents of the Hīnayāna philosophical systems, like the Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas, acknowledged within the eighteen Disciple schools. They were not those who entered the Hīnayāna path and were placed in the Disciple Vehicle because they sought the awakening of a Disciple. Rather, they were placed in the Hīnayāna because they engaged for their own benefit due to their inferior intentions. Nevertheless, they accepted Mahāyāna Sūtras that teach emptiness as the Buddha’s Word. Moreover, they understood the meaning of emptiness.[p.143]The Profound Reality of Interdependence
