| English | Furthermore, the Sūtra on the Fist of Concentration states: “Mañjuśrī, due to not correctly seeing the noble truths, sentient beings with their minds distorted by the four distortions do not pass beyond this mistake that is cyclic existence.”238Candrakīrti cites this sūtra in Clear Words, 171b. This sūtra is not in the translated Word (bka’ ‘gyur), but a close variant can be found in the Teaching the Aspects of Awakening (Bodhipakṣanirdeśa, H. 179, vol. 60), 378a. It says that one will not be liberated due to apprehending the four truths as truly existent, no matter how much one meditates. Moreover, without knowing that the four truths lack intrinsic nature, based on meditating on merely a coarse selflessness of persons and having removed some manifest afflictions, some people think that they have become Arhats. It is said that when they die, they see that they take birth through the power of afflictions, and come to doubt the buddha; thereby, some of these beings even fall into the great hell.
