Furthermore, arguments refuting self-awareness found in texts like the seventh chapter of the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, Dispelling Disputes, and the Finely Woven are similar to the ones stated in our text here.200See Nāgārjuna, Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, VII.8–12; Nāgārjuna, Dispelling Disputes, vv. 34–39; and Nāgārjuna, Finely Woven (Vaidalyasūtra, D. 3826), 23a. The Essence of Madhyamaka (Madhyamakahṛdaya) and the autocommentary on Distinguishing the Two Truths also demonstrate ways of refuting selfawareness. 201See Bhāviveka, Essence of Madhyamaka (Madhyamakahṛdaya, D. 8355), 23b; Jñānagarbha, Autocommentary on “Distinguishing the Two Truths” under v. 6 (D. 3882), 4b. The Introduction to the Middle Way shows four ways of refuting it, with arguments that (1) it is begging the question, what is to be established is not different from the means of establishing it; (2) even with an existent self-awareness, it is impossible to remember what is intrinsically other; (3) action, agent, and patient would be one; and (4) memory occurs even without self-awareness. All these have been cited above.
