As for its explicit invalidation, there is scripture and reasoning. For scriptural invalidation, our teacher himself said that the basic consciousness had another intention. Invalidation by reasoning is like this: If you assert the basic consciousness, then you have to accept that there are no external objects; forms and so on are just appearances from the maturation of predispositions in the basic consciousness. This is not reasonable because of the coextensive presence or absence of the pair of objects and cognitions. Likewise, if you accept the basic consciousness, it is not something that is established by a source of knowledge that investigates the conventional, so it must be posited through a reasoned analysis into its designated object. Thereby, while not wanting to,[p.107]The Profound Reality of Interdependence

you are forced to assert something that exists on its own. Moreover, if you accept the basic consciousness, you have to claim that it is the innate observation of the afflictive mind and the view of the transitory collective. Since the Introduction to the Middle Way mentions many refutations of the position of those who assert consciousness as what is observed in a view of self, it is said that the basic consciousness is not reasonable here. Bhāviveka said that claiming the basic consciousness is simply the way of asserting a person as the Naiyāyikas do, while merely changing the name. Candrakīrti said this as well in his autocommentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way.
