English

An earlier passage from the Descent to Laṅka said that there are no external objects, just mind alone; this latter passage explains this as provisional in meaning. Furthermore, in this context, other sūtras explained as provisional in meaning are explicitly mentioned in the autocommentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way; there are four kinds found in the Sūtra Explaining the Intent: (1) passages that teach that there are no external objects, such as “a reflection is the domain of the Blessed One’s meditative stabilization” 162Sūtra Explaining the Intent, 50b; English trans. in Powers, Wisdom of the Buddha, 151. The passage in the Sūtra Explaining the Intent does not mention “Blessed One” (bcom ldan ’das). (2) passages that teach the dependent and consummate natures to exist on their own, as in “if it is asked, ‘What is this essencelessness that is the characteristic of phenomena?’ ”;163Sūtra Explaining the Intent, 26b; English trans. in Powers, Wisdom of the Buddha, 99. (3) passages that teach the existence of a basic consciousness that is essentially different from the mental consciousness, as in “the appropriating consciousness is profound and subtle”;164Sūtra Explaining the Intent, 21b; English trans. in Powers, Wisdom of the Buddha, 77. and (4) passages that teach that there are three consummate vehicles, as in “those who only go to peace.”165Sūtra Explaining the Intent, 30b; English trans. in Powers, Wisdom of the Buddha, 113.
