| English | It is not possible to have an innate apprehension of the extreme of denigration, so this exists only in the continuum of a proponent of a philosophical system. Furthermore, this cannot exist in the continuum of either those who are in non-Buddhist schools or those who are realists, because if their position does not accept the ultimate existence of any phenomenon, then it must be that they accept it to conventionally exist. For this reason, the apprehension of the extreme of denigration is present in the continuum of a proponent of essencelessness. The Compendium of Determinations says: “Some proponents of Mahāyāna hold on to their own faults, claiming that, ‘everything exists conventionally, nothing ultimately exists.’ . . .with this response.”154Asaṅga, Compendium of Determinations (Yogācārabhūmi Viniścayasaṃgrahanī, D. 4038), 42b. This means that when a Mādhyamika is asked, “What are the two truths?” The Mādhyamika’s response is that the ultimate is not truly existent, and that whatever phenomena appear to truly exist are conventional. The two truths presented in this way is then challenged again as an opposing position with many refutations. The way of asking what the two truths are and the way of responding here still needs to be fleshed out in detail, but I refrain. This is merely their way of negating denigration in brief. |
