This passage does not explicitly state that the dependent nature is the basis of denigration, but this is stated perforce from before by the way that the consummate nature is also denigrated. Also, the way the dependent nature is denigrated is not just to say that there is no dependent nature in general or that it conventionally does not exist; rather, it is to hold that it does not ultimately exist. [703] To maintain this is to hold that there is no dependent nature and thereby is to denigrate the other two natures as well. This is because the dependent nature is the basis for designation of the imagined nature, and has the quality of the consummate nature. So holding that the dependent nature does not ultimately exist is to denigrate all three natures. The general approach of realist philosophical systems is to hold that an entity that does not truly exist must not exist whatsoever; thus, if the dependent nature does not truly exist, it must be nonexistent.
