| English | Further, the Sūtra Explaining the Intent says: “The appropriating consciousness. . . ,”144Sūtra Explaining the Intent, 21b; English trans. in Powers, Wisdom of the Buddha, 77. and there are also passages in texts such as the Golden Light Sūtra, the Descent to Laṅka, and the Densely Arrayed.145See Golden Light Sūtra, 239a; Descent to Laṅka Sūtra; Densely Arrayed (Gaṇḍavyūhasūtra, P. 778, vol. 29), 152. As for reasoning, although there is a lot said in texts such as the Compendium of Mahāyāna and the Principles of Elucidation,146While Vasubandhu’s Principles of Elucidation does not explicitly discuss the basic consciousness, he does so in other texts, such as the Thirty Verses and Treatise on the Three Natures. A presentation of arguments for the basic consciousness can be found in the first chapter of Asaṅga’s Compendium of Mahāyāna; see also the discussion in Griffiths, On Being Mindless, 97–104. in brief, they are included for the most part in the following eight reasons. If there were no basic consciousness it would follow that (1) it would be impossible to appropriate a body, (2) it would be impossible for an initial consciousness to arise, (3) it would be impossible for a mental consciousness to clearly arise, (4) predisposition potentials would be impossible, (5) action would be impossible, (6) bodily feeling would be impossible, (7) a mindless absorption would be impossible, and (8) it would be impossible for consciousness to transmigrate at death. Even though these need to be clarified and expanded a bit more, fearing too many words, I will not elaborate. Further, expansive details of topics like the structure of the afflictive mind, the scriptures and reasoning establishing it, and the different ways of asserting the number of consciousnesses should be known from the texts of Asaṅga and his brother Vasubandhu, such as the Compendium of Determinations (Viniścayasaṃgrahanī), the Compendium of Mahāyāna, Thirty Verses, and in particular, Tsongkhapa’s root text and autocommentary on the basic consciousness.147See Tsongkhapa, Explanation of the Difficult Points of the Mind and Basic Consciousness (yid dang kun gzhi dka’ ba’i gnas rgya cher ’grel pa); Tibetan edition and English trans. in Sparem, Ocean of Eloquence. |
