| English | The first—the predispositions for expression—is deposited only by the depositing mental consciousness. It is the causal condition for the arising of the mental consciousness that imputes a manifold of names for the essences and qualities of all phenomena, from form to omniscience. This is the cause that projects the mind toward objects and so is also called the “predisposition for construction” (spros pa’i bag chags). The second, the predispositions for a view of self, is deposited by the afflictive mind (nyon yid) and its associated factors. It is the causal condition for the arising of cognition with the appearance of self and other. This is the cause for the arising of the view of the transitory collective so is also called the “predisposition for the view of the transitory collective” (’jig lta’i bag chags). The third, predispositions for the branch of existence, is any virtue or vice deposited by the six engaged consciousnesses. It is the causal condition for the arising of cognition with the appearance of the higher and lower realms, transmigration at death, and birth in cyclic existence. This is also called the “predisposition for maturation” (rnam smin gyi bag chags). |
