English

The definition of a proponent of Mind-Only is a Buddhist who refutes external objects with reason and claims that cognition truly exists. A proponent of Mind-Only (sems tsam pa), a proponent of Cognition (rnam rig pa), and a Yogācāra (rnal ’byor spyod pa ba) have the same meaning. The way they assert cognition only is as follows: Even though external objects like forms are not real, cognitions arise with the appearance of objects through the force of predispositions for the appearance of external objects. Since the forms that appear this way are not substantially different from cognition, they assert that all phenomena are established as mind only.
