The Compendium of Metaphysics (Abhidharmasamuccaya) says that the mental engagement of selflessness eliminates the afflictions, and the rest of the features are methods for this complete purification.126See Asaṅga, Compendium of Metaphysics (Abhidharmasamuccaya, D. 4049), 85a. The Commentary on Epistemology also says this: “The view of emptiness liberates; other meditations are for this purpose.” 127Dharmakīrti, Commentary on Epistemology, II.255 (D. 4210), 117a. “Emptiness” here refers to the selflessness that is the emptiness of the existence of a self-subsisting substance. Svātantrikas and below do not understand the selflessness of persons [693] as the emptiness of existing on its own; they also do not understand that to apprehend a person existing on its own is to apprehend the self of persons.
