[691] This is not a problem. In relation to the mind of a disciple who is a proponent of Mind-Only, the meaning of the last wheel sūtras is that the dependent and consummate natures truly exist. In relation to the mind of a Mādhyamika, these two lacking true existence is the meaning of the middle wheel. They are taught this way based on the minds of the disciples, so there is no negation of the sūtra’s meaning, nor is there an internal contradiction on the part of the author. Furthermore, even though the meaning of the subject matter in the Sūtra Explaining the Intent teaches that the dependent nature and consummate nature truly exist, this is not the viewpoint of the author’s own system; no truly existent phenomenon can be posited there in any time, place, or philosophical system. As it is said in the Introduction to the Middle Way: “The buddhas never taught the existence of entities.”121Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way, VI.68. No buddhas taught in any scripture the true existence of entities as their own system. The Descent to Laṅka is cited to establish this in the autocommentary:
