English

In the last wheel, [690] it is taught that the imagined nature (kun btags) does not exist on its own, and that the dependent (gzhan dbang) and consummate natures (yongs grub) exist on their own. This is provisional in meaning. The basis in another intention is that it intends the mere conventional existence of the distinction between what is posited by nominal designation and what is not, in accord with the assertions of the three natures according to proponents of Mind-Only. The purpose is to prevent disciples who, even though they have the Mahāyāna heritage, would develop a view of annihilation—that holds that karmic causality, bondage, and liberation do not exist—if they were taught from the beginning the subtle selflessness of phenomena that negates phenomena’s existence on their own. By training their continua through teaching the coarse selflessness of phenomena, such as the emptiness of a separate substance of the apprehended and the apprehender, later they are led to the subtle selflessness of phenomena, such as is taught in the middle wheel. Therefore, there is a difference between the disciples of the middle and last wheels in terms of the sharpness of their faculties.
