| English | In terms of just this way of classifying what is provisional and definitive in meaning, there is no difference between Svātantrika and Prāsaṅgika. Nevertheless, according to the Svātantrika system, not only must a sūtra that is definitive in meaning mainly teach the ultimate truth, but it also must be accepted as the literal truth. For this reason, in the Hundred Thousand Verse Mother, for instance, when it says that “this is conventionally a truth for the world, but not ultimately,”116I did not find this passage in a Perfection of Wisdom Sūtra. there are some times when the qualifier ultimately is explicitly applied to the object of negation and these are classified as sūtras that are definitive in meaning. Even though the Heart Sūtra mainly teaches the ultimate truth, it does not clearly apply the qualifier ultimately to the object of negation, so it cannot be held to be literal; thus, it is classified as provisional in meaning. |
