| English | The criteria for what is definitive in meaning are as follows: a teaching that cuts through constructs, such as the statement, “phenomena do not truly arise,” having an explicit teaching of the consummate ultimate reality. Thus, it does not guide anyone anywhere else. It is classified as definitive in meaning if it also has a source of knowledge that establishes it in accord with the meaning that is taught. The Light of the Middle Way states: “If one wonders, ‘What is definitive in meaning?’ It is a statement oriented to the ultimate with the support of a source of knowledge because it cannot be guided anywhere else by another.”114Kamalaśīla, Light of the Middle Way, 148b. In this way, from the aforementioned two ways of guiding, since it cannot be guided elsewhere, it is called “the certain meaning” or “definitive in meaning.” The Introduction to the Middle Way states: |
