In general, there are many descriptions in the Hīnayāna canon of the coarse view of the four noble truths, including the sixteen aspects such as impermanence, 103The sixteen aspects of the four truths are as follows: for the truth of suffering,

there are the four aspects of (1) impermanence, (2) suffering, (3) emptiness, and (4) selflessness; for the truth of origin, there are the four aspects of (5) cause, (6) origin, (7) complete production, and (8) condition; for the truth of cessation, there are the four aspects of (9) cessation, (10) peace, (11) perfection, and (12) definite emergence; and for the truth of the path, there are the four aspects of (13) path, (14) suitability, (15) accomplishment, and (16) deliverance. which are traversed until the stage of an Arhat. The Mahāyāna also describes both the sixteen aspects such as impermanence, the coarse view, as well as the way of traversing the path of realizing the lack of intrinsic nature. Other masters accept the commentaries on their viewpoints and explain them that way. However, in this Prāsaṅgika system, the actual path of liberation is exclusively the path of realizing the lack of intrinsic nature in phenomena; other than this, there is no second gateway to peace, as it is said in the Four Hundred Verses: “There is no second gateway to peace.”104Āryadeva, Four Hundred Verses, XII.13a (D. 3846), 13b; English trans. in Sonam,

Āryadeva’s Four Hundred Stanzas on the Middle Way, 245. Therefore, we assert that merely the path that realizes the coarse view of the sixteen aspects, such as impermanence, is not able to achieve even a sublime path within any of the three vehicles. This will be explained extensively below.
