| English | Our tradition of Madhyamaka accepts the illusion-like lack of true existence, having completely negated the extreme of existence that holds any phenomenon to truly exist, and the extreme of nonexistence that holds that phenomena do not exist even conventionally. “Mādhyamika” and “proponent of essencelessness” (ngo bo nyid med par smra ba) have the same meaning. One might wonder why these terms are used. One is called a “Mādhyamika” because of accepting the middle free from the two extremes; one is called a “proponent of essencelessness” due to not accepting any phenomenon to have even the slightest truly existent essence. |
