Therefore, if phenomena (chos can) were essentially distinct from their basic nature (chos nyid)—their emptiness of true existence—they would be truly existent. For this reason, (1) lacking true existence and (2) being conventionally existent are essentially the same yet conceptually distinct. Furthermore, that which conventionally exists is essentially the same as that which is empty of true existence, and that which exists while empty of true existence itself is essentially the same as that which conventionally exists. This is because that which is empty of true existence is not essentially other than that which conventionally exists, and that which conventionally exists is not essentially other than that which is empty of true existence. All phenomena, illustrated by form, can be known in this way, as the Heart Sūtra states: “Form is empty; emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form; form is also not other than emptiness.”58Heart Sūtra (Bhagavatīprajñāpāramitāhṛdaya, H. 499, vol. 88), 45b. These four lines show the meaning of the four stated previously, and feeling, etc., can be applied here as well.[p.49]The Profound Reality of Interdependence
