| English | Its property to be established (bsgrub bya’i chos) is the lack of intrinsic existence. This is called the “property to be established” because it is the property that is to be established with reference to a logical subject, such as a sprout. The logical subject and the property to be established separately are called “positions” (phyogs), but merely nominally, not actually. The actual name for the position is the collective of these two that is what is established. Other names for “what is established” (bsgrub bya) are “thesis” (dam bca’) and “what is inferred” (rjes su dpag bya). Its evidence (rtags) is dependent arising. “Evidence,” “argument” (gtan tshigs), “reason” (rgyu mtshan), and “means of establishment” (sgrub byed) have the same meaning. The “position” (phyogs) in the term “property of the position” (phyogs chos) refers to the first property of what is established—the logical subject. “Subject” in the term “logical subject” is, among its two properties, a property of the evidence (gtan tshigs kyi chos).508Its second property is being a property of what is established (bsgrub bya’i chos). |
