For this reason, Buddhist realist schools assert that entities truly exist for the reason that they are seen to arise, abide, and cease. The expression of praise in the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way ascertains the lack of intrinsic nature in the eight extremes of ceasing and so on.457The praise in the prologue of Nāgārjuna’s Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way states: “I pay homage to the best of speakers, the perfectly awakened one who taught dependent arising—the pacification of conceptual constructs—without ceasing or arising, not annihilated nor eternal, neither coming nor going, and neither different nor the same” (D. 3824), 1b. Thus, if intrinsic existence with respect to conditioned phenomena is negated, it is easy to negate it with respect to unconditioned phenomena. With this in mind, the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way first negates the true existence of conditioned phenomena in earnest:
