Other names for the self include the sustained, an individual, a being, and a person. Contaminations are the outflows in cyclic existence from virtuous and unvirtuous actions. Stoppage prevents the outflows and does not accrue new actions. Perishing is to abstain from food and drink and to undergo austerities of meditative concentration and bodily penance, by which previously accumulated karma is exhausted. Bondages are that which obstructs liberation, such as the 360 wrong views. Karma is fourfold: feeling-producing karma, body-determining karma, status-determining karma, and lifespandetermining karma. Evil is bad actions, those on the side of untruth. Merit is good actions, those on the side of truth. As for liberation, the path of liberation is austerity: the vows of body, such as being naked; the disciplines, such as nonviolence; gnosis, such as intelligence; and relying on the five fires. Based on these, through the exhaustion of previous karma and not producing any new karma, they assert that there is liberation from cyclic existence.
