| English | Their teacher is the great god Īśvara; Akṣapāda and Kaṇāda also accepted him as their teacher. There are many other names for Īśvara, such as Śiva and “the Primordial” (ye srid). For this reason, the followers of Īśvara are called proponents of Īśvara, Śaivas, and proponents of the Primordial, etc. In general, the theistic Sāṃkhyas accept Īśvara as their teacher, and there are Vaiśeṣikas and Naiyāyikas who accept him as their teacher, too. These were described separately before; here, for the actual division of the proponents of Īśvara, there are two: “the manifestors” (gsal byed pa) and “unpierced ears” (rna ba ma phug pa). They hold the texts of the Proclamation of Īśvara Tantra and the Bhurkuṃkūṭa Tantra to be warranted testimony. They hold that Īśvara lives on Mt. Kailāśa with spirit ladies (ma mo), like Lady Umā and Durgā. He stays with his retinue, including thousands of spirits (’byung po), such as Gaṇeśa and the Ṣaṇmukha. This was explained in master Prajñāvarman’s two commentaries on praises.448Prajñāvarman’s Commentary on “Praise of Divine Excellence” (Devātiśāyastotraṭīkā, D. 1113) and Commentary on “Praise of the Exceptional One” (Viśeṣastavaṭikā, D. 1110). |
