| English | In the Prāsaṅgika system, nothing is held to exist on its own, even conventionally. Moreover, for the perspective of an objector like a Svātantrika, who makes the claim that the two truths are not feasible if conventionally nothing arises that exists on its own, Candrakīrti specifically refutes anything existing on its own in both of the two truths. There are three arguments in the root text of the Introduction to the Middle Way that negate what exists on its own, and in the autocommentary there is an argument that it would contradict scripture, so there are four. First, for the three arguments; they are arguments that it would absurdly follow that (1) a sublime being’s meditative equipoise would be a cause for the destruction of entities, (2) the conventional truth would be immune to reasoned analysis, and (3) ultimate arising would not be negated. These are shown in three stanzas: “If they were based on what exists on its own . . .”425Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way, VI.34–36. I will not elaborate further here. |
