Regarding this, laziness is not to delight in the cultivation of meditative stabilization and to enjoy what is unconducive to it. Forgetfulness is to give up the observation of a meditative stabilization. Laxity is to have slight clarity with regard to the object of one’s attention, but without a very clear or firm apprehension of the observation because the mode of apprehension is lax; this comes from dullness, yet can also be virtuous so it is different from dullness. Agitation is a mind not at ease; it is included within attachment that follows after attractive characteristics; it functions to obstruct calm abiding. The latter two can be understood as explained above. |
