English

The essence of the fourfold application of mindfulness is an understanding that engages the path of either mindfulness or meta-awareness (dran shes gang rung); upon observing the body and so on, it is a meditation that investigates the features of both the general and specific characteristics. Although mindfulness and meta-awareness are mainly mentioned, it is also said in the Compendium of Metaphysics and the Treasury of Metaphysics to include with these the concordant mind and mental states. The way of meditating is to meditate on the specific characteristics of the body as unclean, feelings as suffering, the mind as impermanent, and phenomena as thorough affliction to be rejected and complete purity to be adopted. The general characteristics are meditated on in this way: conditioned phenomena are impermanent; contaminated phenomena are suffering; and phenomena are empty and selfless. This is described in the Treasury of Metaphysics.
