Moreover, when you die in the end, even while not wanting to, you will have to put down everything—like the body and possessions—giving them all away at once, all together, and without control. Virtues not dedicated to the welfare of others mature to an effect just once and go away, like a reed. All of them go away; they are let go fruitlessly. The supreme method for accomplishing great benefits for yourself and others is to cut through the impoverished mind now and give whatever is desired for the benefit of sentient beings, who are the best field for generosity. So what is the point of holding on to these things out of stinginess? Merit for achieving buddhahood comes from giving it all away, but you are unable to attain nirvāṇa by holding on to them and not letting them go. Thus the cause for the suffering of existence is clinging and its effect is to be bound in the three kinds of suffering; to be free from these is called “liberation” or “nirvāṇa.” Therefore it makes sense to give up these bonds to existence as much as you can.
