This is an aspiration for the power to satisfy and satiate all beings who are tormented by the pains of hunger and thirst. It is a prayer to eliminate all the harms of thirst, pains of hunger, and desires for food and drink by bringing an inexhaustible stream that continuously rains a heavenly nectar-like bounty of food and drink. In particular, it is said in the Yogācāra Grounds that there is an intermediate eon of famine, in which the lifespan of people is thirty years, and they starve there for seven years, seven months, and seven days. When this happens, when just one grain is put into a basket, it is guarded as if it were a precious gem; they are called “the ones with the baskets.” 318See Asaṅga, Yogācāra Grounds, the Many Grounds of the Main Part, 16a–b.The dried out white bones of the dead are boiled in water to drink; they are “the ones with bare white bones.” With the tip of a spoon they take one or two grains from a vessel and boil them to drink, or they distribute food with the tips of spoons. Thus they are called “the ones sustained by the spoon.” They have no food or drink. Famished, they fall to the ground without being able to get up, and die. At times like these, may I become all kinds of food and drink, whatever is wanted. May I have the power to alleviate all the sufferings of hunger and thirst. I aspire to make it rain food and drink by holding a precious wish-fulfilling gem, like in the story of our teacher’s past life.319This seems to be a reference to the bodhisattva Supriya in Haribhaṭṭa’s Jātakamālā, 8a–12a; see English trans. in Khoroche, Once a Peacock, Once an Actress, 19–25.
