| English | In the worlds of the gods, like the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, and the worlds of the nāgas as well, there are all kinds of pleasant scents of things that come from what is natural, as well as pleasant scents that arise from what is manufactured, such as the fourfold fusion.228The “fourfold fusion” (catuḥsama) is a mixture of agarwood (aloeswood), saffron, camphor, and sandalwood. See McHugh, Sandalwood and Carrion, 275n165. There are incenses like that of black agarwood, and there are wish-fulfilling trees, which immediately deliver whatever is wished. There are trees made of various kinds of precious gems and valuable substances like crystal, ruby, gold, and silver. There are beautiful pools and lakes with lucid waters, which are adorned with flowers like the lotus that grows from the waters. There are water birds like swans, geese, and ducks there, calling out with pleasant songs and beautiful calls. Also, there are fields that are not plowed or cultivated with planted seeds yet have many kinds of crops that naturally grow there. There is more to say, but none of these can ever be fully described. In short, whatever there is in the world that is supremely attractive, all these kinds of substances offered, which are beautiful or appropriate ornaments for offerings that delight[p.103]The Great Hum |
