If they were to reside in things like material forms, then when they are seen by arhats, it would be suitable for attachment and anger to arise in dependence upon the object’s being attractive or repulsive, yet these do not arise; so they do not reside there. Also, if they were to reside in the assemblage of the faculties, then when meditating on the meaning of reality, the afflictions would be observed while the faculties like the eyes are present, but they are not; so they do not reside there, either. How they lack intrinsic arising and intrinsic cessation should also be understood through this demonstration of the lack of intrinsic abiding. It is as the Inquiry of Udayana says: you should abandon the affliction of apprehending a self through meditating on the meaning of selflessness. Master Śāntarakṣita also said:
