| English | Yet it is fine to understand it like this: It is like first identifying, “this is a thief,” and then saying, “this is the thief ’s punishment”; the first is to identify the afflictions and the latter is the antidote that is the nature of relinquishing it. I think this is a good way to explain the meaning of “it being abandoned through simply being known by the wisdom that realizes selflessness.” By analyzing what it is inside of me that is causing the confusion that produces every problem, it is not seen to be anything other than the afflictions. Seeing this, the cause of confusion is identified as the afflictions—what is to be abandoned itself is the root of all problems. This shows that they should be abandoned with this antidote, by knowing their nature with the wisdom that realizes the lack of true existence. Alternatively, sometimes these are said to be the six root afflictions and twenty subsidiary afflictions, but these are just synonymous descriptions. |
