| English | For the sake of protecting the minds of others or promoting their faith, when a bodhisattva who is a monastic does not train as the śrāvakas do in the vowed disciplines taught in the Vinaya by the Blessed One, and does so out of a lack of faith and respect in the requisite disciplines, then it is an afflictive misdeed. If they do not train out of laziness and so on, then it is a nonafflictive misdeed. Doing these protects the minds of others, for the sake of bringing faith to those like householders who do not have faith, and for further increasing the faith of those who are faithful. The vowed disciplines are things like not drinking alcohol, not eating in the afternoon, not digging the earth, and not touching fire.462See Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 295 n374. |
