| English | There are three cases when it is not a misdeed due to the context: (1) when you are teaching others the Dharma, conferring with them about the Dharma, or otherwise bringing joy to another in conversation, (2) when you are listening to a Dharma teaching of someone else, and (3) when listening to someone else’s discourse. There are five cases when it is not a misdeed due to the purpose: (1) when standing up and so on would create an obstacle for someone else listening to the Dharma and thus to protect against the loss of joy, (2) when protecting their attitude with concern that they would thereby lose joy for teaching you the Dharma, (3) to establish virtue when the methods of not rising and so on would incite someone else to what is unvirtuous, (4) to protect a community’s practices when there is an internal rule not to bow and so on, and (5) to protect many others from having malice toward oneself if respect were shown. |
