English	Moreover, a fully ordained monastic with the bodhisattva vow, through being embraced by the Mahāyāna spirit of awakening, will certainly have the discipline of restraint in protecting well the monastic vows. Yet the vow of full ordination to protect oneself is not obtained through the ritual for taking the bodhisattva vow. Rather it is obtained in reliance upon another ritual for taking the pratimokṣa vow. It is lost upon transmigration at death, yet by just this the bodhisattva’s discipline of restraint from wrongdoing is not lost. This is because, when the bodhisattva vow was taken before, it was taken by relying upon the ritual accepting: “In the way that all the bodhisattvas of the past, present, and future practice and train in the discipline[p.230]The Great Hum Duckworth, Douglas, trans. New York, NY: Wisdom Publications, 2025. of restraint, which is the foundation of the trainings, I will completely take this on.” The distinctive discipline of restraint from what is reprehensible by nature is not lost even at the time of transmigration at death. It is said that the foundations of discipline that are shared between the vows of full ordination and the bodhisattva vow are not the bodhisattva disciplines that are trained in by all of the bodhisattvas of the past, present, and future. This is because there are many householders with bodhisattva vows and many bodhisattvas who are gods as well.

Bodhisattvasaṃvara - The ethical code or 'vow' taken by a practitioner on the Great Vehicle path. It is a formal commitment to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all living beings, involving the avoidance of selfish actions and the active practice of helping others.
