| English | The Bodhisattva Grounds states only two causes for losing the bodhisattva vow: forsaking the aspirational spirit of complete awakening and doing an action that is a ground for defeat through a complete great fetter. The Compendium of Determinations states four: (1) cultivating the Hīnayāna spirit; the second cause for losing the vow from the Bodhisattva Grounds is distinguished into two: (2) each of the defeats with the complete great fetter individually, and (3) two or more of them occurring together; and (4) expressing the words to give back the trainings in the presence of another human who understands them. In this way, there is no contradiction between the statements of two and four causes for losing the vow because these statements are said to be like a root text and commentary. The causes can also be comprised within three: forsaking the aspirational spirit, committing a defeat with the complete great fetter, and giving back the vow. |
