| English | There is a threefold division of fetters (kun dkris). For the defeats that were described above, those with lesser and middling fetters do not cause a vow genuinely upheld to be lost, whereas a great fetter does. Also, for two root downfalls—harboring a wrong view and forsaking the spirit of awakening—in the first instant one has the vow and in the second moment the vow is definitely lost. Thus the components of the great fetter need not all be in place for these two downfalls. Except for these two, for the others it becomes a defeat and the vow is lost if all the components of the fetter are in place, but if the great fetter is not complete, then with just the lesser and middling fetters it does not fall within the category of a defeat. Rather it is a downfall that is a lesser or middling contamination (zag pa). Since it is not a defeat, the vow is not lost. |
